Unit 21
Editing techniques.
what is a shot ?
a "shot" can refer to two different parts of the filmmaking process: In production, a shot is the moment that the camera starts rolling until the moment it stops. In film editing, a shot is the continuous footage or sequence between two edits or cuts.In filmmaking and video production, a shot is a series of frames that runs for an uninterrupted period of time. Film shots are an essential aspect of a movie where angles, transitions and cuts are used to further express emotion, ideas and movementShot (filmmaking) - Wikipediahttps://en.wikipedia.org › wiki › Shot_(filmmaking)
what is a sequence?
In film, a sequence is a series of scenes that form a distinct narrative unit, which is usually connected either by a unity of location or a unity of time.Films are made up of sequences of shots. So if a single shot is a bit like a sentence in a story, a sequence is like a paragraph. When you're filming, you should think about how the clips will fit together into these sequences. You can follow some simple systems and rules to help with this. Filmmaking Basics: The Sequence - Learn About Filmhttps://www.learnaboutfilm.com › sequence-2
what is editing?
There are three main editing techniques in the film: continuity editing, montage, and juxtaposition. Continuity editing is showing something as it happens. Montage takes clips from different scenes or movies and puts them together to create a new scene.
what is the role of the editor?
A film editor is primarily responsible for the assembly of a film's raw footage into the final cut of a film. Most of an editor's work is done during post-production. But many editors will begin to assemble scenes and sequences during production as well. Many call the edit of a film the final rewrite of the story. What Does a Film Editor Do — Role and Responsibilitieshttps://www.studiobinder.com › Post-Production
what is montage editing ?
montage, in motion pictures, the editing technique of assembling separate pieces of thematically related film and putting them together into a sequence.A montage sequence is a type of film editing that condenses time. The most common use for this technique is to show sequences of events from the past, present, or future. A recent example in a film would be “Birdman,” which chronicles the life span of one character through a series of short clips and brief scenesWhat Does a Film Editor Do — Role and Responsibilitieshttps://www.studiobinder.com › Post-Production
what is continuity ?
Continuity is the principle of making sure that all details in a film or TV show are consistent from shot to shot and from scene to scene. If a scene upholds the standards of continuity, each shot feels as though it seamlessly flows from the previous shot, reinforcing a sense of realism in the story. How to Maintain Continuity in Film - 2022 - MasterClasshttps://www.masterclass.com › articles › how-to-maintain-...

What is non continuity
Non-continuity editing is when shots are mismatched to disrupt the impression of time and space. This draws the audiences' attention to the process of cutting and disturbs the illusion of 'reality'. An example is the use of flash backs.

LAA: Core assessment
party for the night mv
Editing in mv are used to make the music video look visually aesthetic to watch and to make it look more professional also most music videos are linear as they have have a narrative meaning their usually telling a story in the video. Music videos also tend to use elliptical editing and a various amount of editing techniques such as CGI jump cuts and slow-mos.
In the begging there area lot of jump cuts showing him passing/dancing around the room this helps build the beginning of the narrative as is NVC is all smart and nerdy, they also used elliptical editing for this to shorten the actual time it took. Then there’s a transition of his glow-up from an unconventional, stereotypical NVC smart Asian.
22 seconds in the is a transition as the screen flashes from gray being a nerd to his normal self this helps build the narrative the editor also does this for the aesthetic, this could make the audience more interested now as before he was just a stereotypical nerd doing homework but now an ‘’attractive’ singer. Elliptical editing is used again to show gray now dancing better than before and cooler around the room the use of elliptical editing made the narrative progress and easier for the audience to understand.

At 38 seconds there is a crosscut to LeeHI in the other room dressed nerdy’’ still they use cgi to make it look as if the music is affecting her as it continuously cross cuts between LeeHi listening to gray singing she then glows up as he did because of the music they use her blazer and flash from her being a ‘’nerd’’ to a singer too.
The use of transition at 1:22 of them using locos glasses to connect the two scenes this could also show the use of linear editing, this makes it easier for the audience to follow along with the narrative. At 1:30 we see the use of slow-Mo and the clip being speedy up this makes it look quite trippy and aesthetic along with the CGI music notes this makes the think the music changes them because at 1:40 he has transformed into a ‘’cool’’, ‘’trendy’’ using simple transitions on the screen, we also start to see more reaction shots to locos transformation from the other characters .

matrix 2 trailer
Dominant editing techniques in a trailer would be non-continuity as they aim of a trailer is to give away hints and sin pits of the film to make the audience hooked.
In the beginning there is an establishing shot showing the setting of where it's going to take place. The use of the establishing shot helps make the viewer see where it takes place the use of the cross cuts and fades at 0:08 showing their conversation adds to the tension of the scene. This makes the viewer see where he is. They then use flashbacks witch show hints from the past film and links to the new film this would therefore make the viewer want to watch it to see what's different. They also use the flashbacks very smartly it goes from fast pace to and a few quick cuts to some simple straight cuts with slows it down and don't give away too much since it’s a trailer
At 25 seconds in it goes from intense flashing between different scenes to slow it down. The way the scenes dramatically slowed down could make the audience think his life has also changed and slowed down. Then there is a 180-degree shot of him talking to a past character this could give hints to the audience of who's going to be in the new matrix. At 0:44 we see flashes between different scenes making it more fast pace but also giving suggestions of who's going to be in it, and where it’ll take place the slow-Mo of the well-known blue-pills will make the audience excited to watch as there is still references to the original film.

They use flashes a lot and dissolve. This makes the audience wonder what happens after each flash and dissolves. The use of eyeline match to show the tension in the conversation between the two at 1:46, there is multiple jump cuts and quick cuts between a fighting scene this intensifies the scene and makes the audience wonder how they got there it creates suspense and as a trailer should, this is also typical for an action movie.

The slow-Mo used at 2:04 shows a big explosion and this will capture the audience's attention as they will wonder how they got there and how it happened or who caused it. The use of CGI at 2:06 reinforces it’s a si-fy action movie. The various use of slow-Mo intensifies the scene and keeps it moving and entertaining. This will therefore capture the audience to watch it when it comes out as a trailer should.
The use of the reaction shot of the costumer as the barrister tries to impress them shows that the costumer was impressed this could show the audience that the costumer always leaves happy and impressed with the Service. The use of the 180-degree rule and eye line match a t 0:31 shows the barister hading the drink to the costumer this was edited like one whole long take but they used multiple cgi and sfx in between it to make it more appealing and engaging to watch.

I think that Starbucks have used good editing techniques to engage and make the advert more interesting to watch because usually people just skip the I especially like the use of the editing technique soo as they use a panning shot and link it with the transition.
at 0:02 seconds we see various different costumers of various ethnic groups come in as it cuts between them this could be elliptical editing as its all happening at the same time bt cut into smaller parts to make it short since its an advert.
continuity experiment

Logging into a computer continuity video

Although I wish I had taken more shots and takes of each shot of the actor doing the same thing, so the continuity would be cleaner and more precise and make more sense in general because some of my shots do not make sense or the actors are doing different things. I wish I used more eyeline matches when Olivia enters the room so it is more interesting to watch, and it would just make sense.
I used a long shot of Christina walking to open the door and used elliptical editing of Olivia waiting. This therefore makes it a bit more seamless and interesting for the audience to watch. But I wish I had taken more shots and shot them for longer so that I would have more to work with.

Development portfolio
For my continuity sequence I was asked to pick a scenario, film, and edit it. I chose `someone walks into a room and logs into a computer ‘.’ The context was just Olivia meeting Christina in the computer room and logging in. I wanted to try to make it look more fluid with a lot of seamless editing and more shots and takes so I have more to work with.
The appropriate continuity techniques I used was match on action as I thought it would make it looks more seamless and interesting to watch since it is a boring scenario, and it added more movement.

NON-continuity experiment
non-continuity sequence
An intro for a realty show contestant
development portfolio
For my non-continuity sequence i was asked to pick a scenario, film and edit it. i choose ''an opening introduction for a reality tv show''. the context was olivia introducing herself and answering questions about her intrests such as music. i was aiming to make it look as over the top as possible loads of edits such as slow Mo's, wipes, slides and reverses, so it has more movement fun to watch/interesting for the veiwer.
i also used a reverse which made it look a little like a parody but i still like the way it came out. i do wish i had planned more thoroughly so it was easier to film and follow my plan i could've done a cleaner better job at the planning especially the story board.
i wish i had used/ taken more shots of her just walking and being herself to fill in the spaces between each question, also because some of the questions aren't as interesting as i wanted them to be. the appropriate non-continuity techniques i used where revers and slow mo's as they where very typical for reality tv show introductions . The slow mo added to the visual effect of the video. made it look more cool and added to the non-continuity.
